Jimmy Carter

Whatever you may think about this, at least the man is actually trying. What's more, his past efforts give him some credibility with Palestinians. If you were them, would you believe anything Condoleezza Rice said?

The Onion, as usual, got there first. It's far too profane for Jimmy, but it's not hard to imagine him sitting somewhere watching events play out on TV and thinking along those lines.

I'm sure the regulars are spazzing over this, but all Carter is really doing is acknowledging the reality on the ground. We eventually talked to Arafat, after all, and Fatah was no more respectable then than Hamas is now.

That's a good point, brian. It's not like talking to Hamas would be some kind of first-ever break with policy. The need is for an impartial mediator who will listen to both sides equally, not start with an agenda favoring one side or another. Carter can at least get people to start talking to him, if not to each other.
